The 8th Selection Guidelines of Dharma Assistants (2025)

(In accordance with the True Buddha School (TBS) Constitution and Bylaws; Rules and Regulations governing dharma instructors and dharma assistants)

1. Registration Date:
From now until September 30, 2024 (based on the date of documents received at True Buddha Foundation's offices). Late submissions will not be accepted.

2. Registration Addresses:
The addresses of World True Buddha Foundation (TBF) offices in Seattle and Taiwan respectively are:

3. Registration Methods:
A. If there is a local TBF vajrayana association or vajrayana buddhist council (e.g., Taiwan, Malaysia, or Indonesia), applicants should send their registration documents to the local TBF association or council by September 15, 2024. The local TBF association or council will then assist in compiling and forwarding all documents to TBF by September 30, 2024.
B. In the absence of a local TBF vajrayana association or vajrayana buddhist council, applicants should send their documents directly to the office of TBF by September 15, 2024.

4. Eligibility:
A. Applicants must be 21 years or older.
B. Applicants must be TBS disciples who have taken refuge for more than three years. They must possess good character, good health, no criminal record, and no bad habits such as smoking, drinking or gambling. (The recommending cultivation venue – that is, temple/chapter/society – will be able to attest to this).
i. Applicants must be under 60 years old, as health and physical strength are important requirements for providing dharma services at a cultivation venue. Applicants must possess at least a high school education (please provide photocopy of educational certificates), and have served at a temple/chapter/society for over two years with excellent performance.
ii. Applicants over 60 years old may be considered if they are in good health and have demonstrated excellent service. They should have a recommendation letter from the cultivation venue, and their eligibility will be subject to review on an individual basis.
C. Applicants must have no family issues, debts, or mental health issues (spiritual disturbances). (The recommending cultivation venue to attest to this).
D. Applicants must be familiar with the "Four Preliminary Practices," "Eight Principal Deities Practices," and basic Tantric Karma Practices.
E. To become a dharma assistant, in order to participate in the examination for the selection process, each applicant must have a recommendation letter from a TBS cultivation venue where the applicant attends or serves. Recommendations from other Masters, Senior Reverends, or Reverends are invalid.
F. Applicants must have completed the 2024 "True Buddha Dharma Classroom", a training course designed for future lay dharma propagating personnel.
G. If an applicant is unable to attend the training, he or she must provide an explanation, subject to approval by TBF's core committee. The applicant will then need to complete the training via recorded sessions and an online makeup exam by the end of April 2025.
H. There is no limit on the number of candidates recommended by each cultivation venue.
I. Each applicant is required to complete these four pieces of homework (applicant to be self-accountable and record accordingly):
i. Padmakumara Heart Mantra one million times.
ii. High King Avalokitesvara Sutra one thousand times.
iii. Hundred-Syllable Mantra ten thousand times.
iv. Complete 200 sessions of Vajrasattva Heart Bodhisattva Practice.

5. Required documents:
A. A completed "Dharma Assistant Application Form" with a recent 2-inch color photo.
B. A recommendation letter from the cultivation venue that meet these specific criteria:
i. It must be an official letter from the cultivation venue.
ii. It must include the cultivation venue’s full name on letterhead.
iii. The contents should provide recommendation details from the cultivation venue’s main committee. The recommendation must be officially recorded as a collective resolution from a main committee's meeting.
iv. The official letter must include the cultivation venue’s stamp and signatures of main committee members.
C. A completed “Questionnaire for Dharma Assistant Candidates.” Download the questionnaire from the provided URL.

7. 6. Qualification Review:
Applicants should register according to the above requirements. After TBF's core committee meeting which involves review and approval, exam permits will be issued via email.

7. For the 8th Selection of Dharma Assistants for 2025, details on the four main on-site examination venues and dates are announced by the TBF's Dharma Affairs Department.
Please read "Announcement No. 006" dated July 8, 2024.

8. Languages used for the on-site examination and interview:
Chinese, English, Indonesian, or Portuguese (candidate to choose one).

9. Eligibility Scoring: Eligibility to take the exam is determined by a points system:
• Participation in the 2024 training course for "True Buddha School's future lay dharma propagating personnel": 20 points.
• Comprehensive Examination: 40 points.
• Chanting of prayers and use of ritual tools: 10 points.
• Interview: 30 points.

10. Appointment of Dharma Assistant
A. Upon passing all sections of the exam, the term appointment for the successful candidate as Dharma Assistant lasts for three years, subject to review by TBF.
B. Eligibility is reviewed every three years; successful candidates may then be able to renew their term.
C. Dharma assistants must serve at their original recommending cultivation venue and cannot serve elsewhere.
D. They must propagate True Buddha Tantric Dharma and co-operate with the cultivation venue in promoting dharma activities.
E. The cultivation venue’s main committee has the authority to decide to dismiss a dharma assistant, and this must be based on a collective resolution at a main committee meeting. Afterward, a written report must be presented to TBF for assessment and reply. The execution of the dismissal notice will be carried out by TBF.

4. Application Eligibility:
A. Applicants must be current dharma assistants. Regardless of their number of terms of service, current dharma assistants can apply to become dharma instructors.
B. Applicants must be recommended by their cultivation venue (i.e. temple/chapter/society). Each cultivation venue can recommend only one current dharma assistant for each language category (Chinese, English, Indonesian, Portuguese) to take part in the selection of future dharma instructors.
C. Applicants must be resident or long-serving dharma assistant at the recommending cultivation venue.
D. Applicants must be under 60 years old, as health and physical strength are important requirements for providing dharma services at the cultivation venue. If dharma assistants over 60 years old are in good health and have demonstrated commitment during dharma propagation, they can still register for the selection of Dharma Instructor without this age limitation.
E. Each applicant is required to complete these seven compulsory pieces of homework (applicant to be self-accountable and record accordingly):
i. The Great Homage 100,000 times.
ii. The Fourfold Refuge 100,000 times.
iii. Padmakumara Heart Mantra 1 million times.
iv. Vajra Protector Mantra 100,000 times (please choose your preferred Protector).
v. High King Avalokitesvara Sutra 1,000 times.
vi. Hundred-Syllable Mantra 10,000 times.
vii. Complete 200 sessions of Vajrasattva Heart Bodhisattva Practice.

5. Required documents:
A. A completed "Dharma Instructor Application Form" with a recent 2-inch color photo.
i. Application form can be downloaded from the provided URL at the end of the document.
B. A recommendation letter from the cultivation venue that meet these specific criteria:
i. It must be an official letter from the cultivation venue.
ii. It must include the cultivation venue's full name on letterhead.
iii. The contents should provide recommendation details from the cultivation venue's main committee. The recommendation must be officially recorded as a collective resolution from a main committee's meeting.
iv. The official letter must include the cultivation venue's stamp and signatures of main committee members.
C. A recommendation letter from the local TBF vajrayana association or vajrayana buddhist council. In the absence of a local TBF vajrayana association or vajrayana buddhist council, this letter is not be required.
D. Dharma affairs reports to be submitted biannually.
E. Two or more recommendation letters from Masters. Each recommendation letter should be written and signed by a Master. If there is a local Master, then one of these letters must come from that locality’s Master. (locality: country)
F. One or more recommendation letters from the cultivation venue's resident/long-serving reverends or senior reverends. Each recommendation letter should be written and signed by one resident/long-serving reverends or senior reverends. If the cultivation venue has no resident/long-serving reverends or senior reverends, this requirement is not required.
G. Social service records (e.g., volunteer work, community service, social work in the context of country, or participation in Lotus Light Charity Society’s activities).
H. Certificates of attendance received from any training courses by TBS. These can be from seminars, workshops, day-camps, Buddhist College, True Buddha Dharma Classroom, True Buddha School Online University. Please provide photocopies of graduation certificate for our reference.

i. A review of a book between 1000-1200 words, reflecting your thoughts. Please indicate title of book.

10. Eligibility Scoring:
Eligibility to take the exam is determined by a points system:
• Participation in the 2024 training course for "True Buddha School's future lay dharma propagating personnel": 10 points.
• Comprehensive Examination: 35 points.
• Chanting of prayers and use of ritual tools: 15 points.
• Interview: 30 points.
• Book review: 10 points.
